How many follow-up questions is too many?
Three follow-ups on one answer is usually the ceiling. After the third, the person has either given you material or told you politely that there is no more.

Count questions per topic rather than per conversation. Two questions and one contribution from you is fine even if both answers were short. Five questions with no contribution is in trouble even if the answers were long.
Watch the length too. If your follow-ups are getting longer and the answers are getting shorter, stop asking and say something about yourself.
Treat the limit as a ratio rather than a fixed number: about three questions for every one contribution of your own. The count resets when the other person asks you something, because a question back means the exchange has become two-way and the pressure is no longer on one side. If you notice the ratio slipping towards questions only, the next turn should be a sentence about you, not a sharper question.
