Treat it as a real answer and route around it. Send one follow-up in the same thread; if that is silent too, write to a second professor whose work genuinely overlaps yours, and ask the department's teaching staff, post-doctoral researchers and doctoral students as well — a research placement does not have to start with the head of a lab.
