How early should I ask a professor for an extension?

Nov 2, 2026
Short answer

Ask as soon as the problem is visible, and always before the deadline: three or more days of notice reads as planning, not as an emergency.

If you can see the clash at the start of term, raise it while the answer can still be a rearrangement.

Some courses state in the syllabus that an extension must be requested in writing, which means a conversation after class does not count until you confirm it by email. Read that paragraph before you write, and quote the rule you are relying on if the course publishes one. If the syllabus is silent, assume the default: ask early, in writing, and name the date.
