What do I say when a meeting runs over and I have to cut a topic?

Nov 2, 2026
Short answer

Name the topic, the destination and the date, then move on: That is eight minutes. I am parking the rest of this and putting it first on Thursday. A topic that vanishes without a home returns next week.

If you are not the chair, ask for the cut in one sentence with a destination - "Can we take this to the thread and put it first on Thursday?" - then paste your note into the thread within the hour, so the topic is parked with evidence rather than goodwill. If you are the chair, put the parked item at the top of next week's agenda: a parked topic that never reappears teaches the room that parking means dropping, and the next cut will be resisted.
