How do I describe my symptoms to a doctor in English?

Oct 27, 2026
Short answer

Answer three questions in a fixed order: where it hurts, what it feels like, and how long it has been going on. A working example is The pain is here, under my ribs on the right side. It is a sharp pain and it comes and goes. It started four days ago.

Answer three questions in a fixed order: where it hurts, what it feels like, and how long it has been going on. A working example is The pain is here, under my ribs on the right side. It is a sharp pain and it comes and goes. It started four days ago. Add what makes it better or worse and what you have already taken, then let the doctor ask.

If your English slows down when you are nervous, write the three lines at home and take the note with you. Reading a sentence you prepared is normal, and a doctor would rather hear one clear sentence than watch you search for a word under pressure. Add the date the symptom started and one thing that makes it worse, and you have a description that survives most of a consultation.
