How do I leave a group conversation politely in English?
Give one short reason for going, one warm line about the conversation, and no request.
Give one short reason for going, one warm line about the conversation, and no request.
The reason should belong to your day: I'm going to head off — early start tomorrow. If you want to see them again, leave a hook: I'm at the Thursday run most weeks — if you're ever there, say hi.
The wording changes with what you are actually leaving. Leaving the group: “I'll let you all carry on.” Leaving one person inside a group: “Anyway, I'll let you two talk.” Leaving the whole event, where you may want to thank a host: “I'm heading off — thanks for organising this.” Do not add a new question on the way out; it gives the other person a reason to hold you in the conversation you are trying to end.
