How do I join a conversation when three people are already talking?

Nov 2, 2026
Short answer

Listen for a turn that has just ended, then add a sentence about their topic rather than a question.

If the group is talking fast, join at a slower moment — after an answered question, after laughter, or after a subject change. Use an opening that costs nothing, such as Mind if I join?, then add one sentence of your own.

You can also enter with a place rather than a line: stand at the open side of the circle instead of behind one person, and say nothing for the first thirty seconds. In a group of three that reads as joining, while standing behind someone reads as queueing. If nobody has looked at you after about ninety seconds, move to another group; that is a cost decision, not a failure.
