Is there a free AI tool that checks my IELTS Writing Task 1 and Task 2 essays and gives a band score?

Short answer

Free checkers exist, and the first thing to check is whether the report separates the four criteria instead of printing one number. Ask for two things.

Free checkers exist, and the first thing to check is whether the report separates the four criteria instead of printing one number. Ask for two things. First, the criterion names IELTS publishes: Task Achievement or Task Response, Coherence and Cohesion, Lexical Resource, Grammatical Range and Accuracy. Second, the sentence or paragraph each score is attached to, so you can see what the tool reacted to. For a realistic check, paste a Task 1 answer of at least 150 words and a Task 2 answer of at least 250 words written under exam timing, because short answers break the word-count expectations the descriptors assume.

Before you judge a free checker by its score, test it with a deliberate error you already know about: leave the overview out of a Task 1 answer, or answer a Task 2 question on a related but different topic. A tool that reacts to those changes is reading your text; a tool that returns the same band either way is not. Check the word count it reports as well, because an answer below the published minimum cannot be judged on the descriptors' terms.
