How long should I speak in IELTS Speaking Part 2?

Nov 4, 2026
Short answer

Keep going until you are stopped, and plan slightly more than two minutes so the stop arrives while you still have something to say. If your answer finishes at ninety seconds, add the change block rather than a second place.

The examiner stops the turn rather than waiting for a conclusion, and then usually asks one or two short rounding-off questions on the same topic. Keep one extra sentence ready about the place, so the follow-up does not land on silence. Being cut off mid-sentence is normal and not a penalty; what changes is only how much language the examiner heard.
