How can I tell a Band 7 answer from a Band 8?

Oct 26, 2026
Short answer

Listen for whether the speech keeps flowing while the ideas get harder. A Band 7 answer keeps going with visible effort and occasional mid-sentence repairs, while a Band 8 answer keeps the same flow and makes fewer errors, even when the topic turns abstract.

The descriptors also move the ceiling of what is possible: at Band 7 the positive features of Band 6 are present with some of Band 8, while a Band 8 performance shows a wide range used flexibly, with the majority of sentences error free. The practical test is whether the answer still sounds organised when you add a follow-up question.

A quick test you can run yourself: take one answer, add a follow-up question that asks why, and record the extension. If the added answer keeps the same fluency and stays organised, you are producing Band 8 behaviour; if the extension breaks into fragments, the Band 7 descriptors are still the honest description.
