How many words does IELTS Listening note completion allow?

Nov 3, 2026
Short answer

The limit is printed above each set of questions, so read it every time. Published examples and the transfer check that catches over-limit answers.

It depends on the instruction printed above that set of questions, so the honest answer is that you read it every time. Published instructions include ONE WORD AND/OR A NUMBER and NO MORE THAN TWO WORDS, and sets inside one paper can differ.

Two consequences follow: read the instruction during the preview time and note it in the margin, then count again at transfer. An answer over the limit is not marked down, it is marked wrong, and the words that push it over are usually an article or a unit the note line already prints.
