Is there a tool that scores my IELTS Speaking answers?

Oct 26, 2026
Short answer

There are practice tools that rate a recording against criteria similar to the descriptors, and they can be useful because they force you to produce speech instead of reading. What they cannot do is issue an official IELTS band: only a certificated examiner at a test centre can do that.

Use such a tool for the thing it does reliably, which is giving you a fast second opinion on fluency, grammar and vocabulary while you practise. Record the result next to your own description of the same answer, and notice where the two disagree, because those disagreements are usually the next thing to work on.

When two sources disagree about the same answer, keep the disagreement as evidence instead of picking the friendlier number. Name the criterion they disagree on, listen again to the middle thirty seconds, and decide which judgement matches what an outside listener would actually hear.
