How long should an IELTS Speaking Part 1 answer be?

Oct 19, 2026
Short answer

Answer the question directly and develop a relevant point as appropriate. This guide does not set an official sentence count or a seconds-per-answer rule. The official 4–5-minute duration describes the whole of Part 1. Follow the examiner's questions and instructions instead of trying to force every answer into an identical length.

The example illustrates a direct answer with a reason and detail. It is not a rule that every answer must contain the same number of sentences. If the question asks how often, give a frequency; if it asks about a past experience, choose information about that time. Extra detail helps only when it fits the question.
