Short answer

In the ETS sample tests that contain the task, the message lasts 30 to 45 seconds, you have 30 seconds to prepare, and you speak for 60 seconds, with responses rated on a 0 to 5 scale.

In the ETS sample tests that contain the task, the message lasts 30 to 45 seconds, you have 30 seconds to prepare, and you speak for 60 seconds, with responses rated on a 0 to 5 scale. The current 11-question format has no separate problem-solving item, so in practice the clock is one you set yourself: thirty seconds of grid, sixty seconds of speech, then a listen-back.

If the message cuts out before the deadline, do not restart: say what you did hear, name the assumption you are making out loud, and solve for that. Silent guessing is the only unrecoverable move. Two habits also help under the clock: decide your choice before you start speaking, so the middle of the answer is not a search, and hold one spare sentence in reserve, such as who will follow up, so a fast finish does not become a repeated second option.
