Does spelling or capitalisation cost marks in IELTS Listening?
Spelling does: a misspelt answer is wrong, though British and American spellings are both accepted. Capital letters do not, and answers may be written in upper or lower case.
Spelling does, and it is marked strictly: a misspelt answer is wrong, although British and American spellings are both accepted. Capitalisation does not, and answers may be written in upper or lower case. The other format failures that lose marks are exceeding the word limit and copying words printed around the gap.
Two details decide most borderline cases. Numbers may be written as digits or as words, so the same answer can be accepted in more than one shape when the limit allows. And a plural is part of the answer: if the sentence around the gap needs a plural, a singular form is wrong even when you heard the word correctly.
