How can I negotiate salary in English?
Agree the scope first, then give a range instead of a single number, with a reason attached: Based on the scope we just described and my current work, I am looking for a range of 65,000 to 75,000.
Agree the scope first, then give a range instead of a single number, with a reason attached: Based on the scope we just described and my current work, I am looking for a range of 65,000 to 75,000. If the base is fixed, ask about the review date, the training budget or the start date instead of repeating the same request. Finish without committing on the spot: Thank you. I would like one day to read the offer, and I will come back to you tomorrow. Write the agreed points down afterwards, so the version you accept is the one you can quote.
Write the range and the reason on one line before the meeting, and keep a second line for the alternative you will ask for if the base salary is fixed. Two lines are enough: the version you read from during the meeting is usually the version you say confidently.
