Ask why the change is needed and verify an unclear explanation before adopting it. Fluency alone does not show that a rewrite preserves your message.

Compare the proposed change with your intended message. Check the actor, action, time, uncertainty, and commitments. In an original fictional example, I might finish on Friday. expresses a possibility. Replacing it with I will finish on Friday. changes the commitment. A smoother sentence is not an acceptable correction if you did not intend that promise.
