How to Pronounce English Words Correctly When They Are Numbers, Dates and Prices
Amounts, years, dates and phone numbers are the words most often misheard even when your English is otherwise clear. This guide shows how to pronounce English words correctly when the word is a figure: the -teen and -ty pairs, where and belongs, prices, year and date readings, and a twenty-item read-back drill.

An ordinary conversation in English can run smoothly for years, and then a call turns into arithmetic: someone says one thousand and five hundred for 1,500, the client writes down two figures, and the invoice comes back wrong.
A figure has no grammar around it to repair it, and it is usually the only new information in the sentence, so it survives on sound alone. This guide is about how to pronounce English words correctly when the word is a figure.
The pairs that fail first: 13 and 30, 15 and 50
thirteenputs the beat on the second syllable, and the vowel there is long and clear.thirtyputs the beat on the first, and the second is short and weak, so the t sounds like a d.
The same shape covers fourteen and forty, fifteen and fifty, sixteen and sixty, and the rest.
Then add the repair that costs a second: give the number a unit, because fifteen people and fifty dollars cannot be confused. For an amount that will be written down, say it twice: one five zero, that is one hundred and fifty.
Amounts: where and belongs, and how to group thousands
English puts and in one place: between a hundreds word and the tens or units after it. 319 is three hundred and nineteen, and 1,056 is one thousand and fifty-six. British English keeps it; American English often drops it.
That rule explains the opening mistake: 1,500 has a hundreds word, so the and does not go there, and the reading is one thousand five hundred or fifteen hundred. One thousand and five hundred puts a break where no break belongs, and the ear hears two amounts.
Read long amounts in groups of three: one million, two hundred and fifty thousand.
The dot in a decimal is point and the digits after it are separate: 3.2 is three point two, 9.18 is nine point one eight. Keep it audible, or 1.5 and 15 collapse into one word.
Prices: the currency word is part of the number
A price is a number with a unit, and the unit removes the doubt. The commonest form gives the pounds then the pence, or the dollars then the cents: £3.50 is three fifty, $4.95 is four ninety five. With the currency words the varieties separate: American English requires and, so $20.80 is twenty dollars and eighty cents, while British English allows one pound forty-five pence. An exact amount needs the currency word: £50 is fifty pounds, not fifty. Above a hundred, prefer the full reading, one thousand two hundred and forty dollars rather than twelve forty, and close with the unit: So that is three hundred and fifty dollars, payable on the third.
Years: twenty nineteen, or two thousand and nineteen
Both readings are correct; the choice is habit, not accuracy. Before 2000 the year is two pairs: 1961 is nineteen sixty-one. A zero in the third digit has two options: 1908 is nineteen oh eight. Years ending in two zeros take the hundreds form: 1500 is fifteen hundred.
2000 is two thousand, and the years after it have both readings: 2003 is twenty oh three anywhere, or two thousand and three in British English and two thousand three in American English.
So 2019 has two honest answers: twenty nineteen, shorter and now usual in both varieties, and two thousand and nineteen, longer but not wrong. The real error is switching between them inside one conversation, because the listener has to re-tune.
Dates: the third of March, or March third
British English writes the day first, as 3 March 1993; American English writes the month first, as March 3, 1993, which makes a purely numeric date risky. Spoken, the ordinal carries the day: the third of March, or March the third in American usage. Read the date back with the month name: So that is the third of March, not the fourth of April.
Phone numbers, account numbers and postcodes
A telephone number is not a number. It is a string of digits read one at a time, with a pause in the middle. Zero can be zero or oh, and in British English a repeated digit is sometimes double, so 01223 455933 is oh one double two three, four double five, nine double three.
- Announce the shape:
I will read it in three groups. - Group in threes or fours, and pause between groups, not inside them.
- Read postcode letters with a spelling alphabet, because b, d, e and p blur on a line.
Then close the loop with a read-back: the other person's version, spoken back for correction. Can you read that back to me before I go? When you receive a figure, read it back in the shape it arrived: So that is order four five one two, for fifteen hundred units, arriving on the third.

A twenty-item drill you can run in ten minutes
Read each line aloud, and have a partner or an app write down what they hear; repeat only the lines that came back wrong.
| Written | Say it like this |
|---|---|
| 13 / 30 | thirteen / thirty |
| 15 / 50 | fifteen / fifty |
| 18 / 80 | eighteen / eighty |
| 1,500 | fifteen hundred |
| 1,050 | one thousand and fifty |
| 2,750 | two thousand seven hundred and fifty |
| 105 | a hundred and five |
| 1,150 | one thousand one hundred and fifty |
| 0.75 | zero point seven five |
| 9.18 | nine point one eight |
| £3.50 | three pounds fifty |
| $19.99 | nineteen ninety-nine |
| $1,240 | one thousand two hundred and forty dollars |
| 2019 | twenty nineteen |
| 2005 | twenty oh five |
| 1908 | nineteen oh eight |
| 3 March | the third of March |
| 04/05 | the fourth of May |
| 01223 455933 | oh one double two three, four double five, nine double three |
| SW1A 2AA | S as in Sierra, W, one, A as in Alpha, two, A as in Alpha |
Then run the read-back loop five times: read the list at speed, again with a clear beat on every stressed syllable, record it and transcribe what you hear, put the failed lines into sentences, and read those in a five-minute call.
Frequently asked questions
Which app can check and correct my English pronunciation?
Choose an app that returns a transcript as well as a score, because the transcript is the only part you can audit. Say thirteen and thirty in one sentence and check whether the app separates them: an app that hears both as the same word cannot correct the distinction that matters most for figures. HiBay's pronunciation training is built on repeat-after-model drills.
how to improve english pronunciation quickly
Quickly means one target at a time, not a new accent. Start with what costs money or time: the -teen and -ty pairs, the and in amounts, the year and the phone number chunk. Ten minutes a day on one column of the drill table, recorded and compared, beats an hour of general practice, and progress is measured by what a listener writes down.
